Huge Sensor for Tremendous Photographs
Superb image quality: 10.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, extensive noise reduction technology, and 14-bit conversion for outstanding color tones and gradations.

Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers the most pixels in its class. This APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. 14-bit A/D conversion means fine transitions from light to dark tones, and a significant drop in digital and shadow noise. The EOS 40D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600, plus ISO 3200* in extended mode) which is selectable in 1/3 stop increments. The EOS 40D's CMOS sensor uses much of the new technology first seen in the EOS-1D Mark III camera. New manufacturing techniques mean each pixel is more sensitive to light, and less area between pixels is wasted on the sensor. The on-chip noise reduction electronics are also entirely new, and combine with the sensor's general design for less digital noise and better high-ISO performance than ever before. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.

The high performance ultra wide angle zoom lens

Developed to succeed the high-performance EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM has the leading wide-angle zoom range in its class. In response to increased demand for ultra-wide zoom lenses for 35mm SLR cameras, and digital SLR Camera's that tend to have a smaller frame size when compared to the 35mm, Canon has developed the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM. This is the first Canon EF lens to incorporate three types of aspherical elements (ground, replicated and Gmo [glass molded]) to effectively correct the aberrations that occur during zooming. And despite its longer zoom range the EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM delivers the highest image quality in its class.

The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM has two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements, which effectively correct the chromatic aberrations prone to occur in wide-angle lenses. As a result, colour fringing along the edges of the subject is virtually eliminated and both image resolution and contrast are exceptionally high. The inner focusing and ring type USM (Ultrasonic motor) ensures both silent and high-speed AF operation.

By increasing the focusing group's power, a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m throughout the zoom range is attained. Since the lenses front element does not rotate during focusing, the effect of a circular-polarizing (PL-C) filter, attached to the lens, is retained during both focusing and zooming. The lens mount, switch panel, zoom ring and focusing ring use Canon's unique dust and moisture resistant design making this lens suitable for use in harsh environments. A drop-in, gelatin filter holder is provided at the rear of the lens.

Like the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM this lens incorporates a newly developed EMD (Electromagnetic diaphragm) featuring a circular aperture. The EMD maintains a near-circle opening at large apertures, which offers attractive background blur and is useful for portraits when combined with the fast f/2.8 aperture. The diaphragm opening forms a near circle at apertures from f/2.8 to f/5.6. The secondary diaphragm cuts out unwanted light to help improve the image contrast.

The ultra-wide angle zoom range of the EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM is ideal for use on digital SLR cameras. Generally digital SLR cameras have a smaller imaging area than a 35mm SLR camera. This means the effective focal length is increased by the same ratio as the size difference. On the EOS D30 the effective focal length of the lens is 26-56mm equivalent in 35mm format while on the EOS-1D the equivalent focal length is 21-46mm.
The EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM is supplied with the newly developed bayonet-type Hood EW-83E which is easier to attach and more durable. The hood features a petal-shaped design and a velvet material inside for maximum light absorption.

This vastly increases the range of circumstances in which hand-held photography is possible, limiting the need to carry a tripod. During major movement in a single direction, IS Mode 2 automatically determines that the movement is conscious panning and halts correction in the relevant direction, thereby preventing shake-return. The system automatically detects a lack of movement/vibration in order to preventing errors during tripod use.

Fast Auto-Focus

The inner focusing ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) converts ultrasonic vibrational energy into rotational force to deliver high-speed, high-precision, super efficient and virtually noiseless auto focusing, with good holding torque for rapid response, accurate stopping. Full-time manual override without damage to the autofocus mechanism is featured. Minimum focusing distance is just 0.7m throughout the entire zoom range.

Ideal for digital

Lens shape and coatings have been optimised to suppress ghosting and flaring. This makes the lens ideal for use with digital cameras that are more susceptible to reflections off the recording media than are film cameras. When fitted to digital cameras with an APS-C size sensor such as the EOS 10D, the lens will have a magnification advantage, with an equivalent focal length range of 45-480mm in the 35mm format.

Precision optics for high image quality

22 lens elements in 16 groups offer low distortion, high corner-to-corner resolution throughout the entire zoom range. As with all EF lenses, aperture is controlled with an EMD (electromagnetic diaphragm) for fast, quiet, highly precise control and incorporates a circular aperture diaphragm for beautifully pleasing background blur, from full aperture to two stops down. The use of 3 Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass elements effectively curtails the residual chromatic aberrations that can plague lesser quality long lenses, while aspherical elements correct various kinds of aberration that occur during zooming to give the lens the unsurpassed clarity and resolving power that are the hallmark of professional L-series lenses.

A 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD screen provides an ultra-wide 170-degree viewing angle from all directions. Images on the D200 can be magnified by up to 400% so users can check for fine detail.

The top LCD panel is the largest in the industry, containing a wealth of data such as shooting mode, battery condition, card information, gridline display, shutter speed, f-stop, and shots remaining. Advanced Auto Exposure system
Consistently dependable exposure is the hallmark of Nikon's exclusive 3D-Color Matrix Metering II. Refinements for the D80 include its inheriting the advanced exposure evaluation system from the Nikon D2Xs and D200 digital SLR cameras. Brightness, color, contrast, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance information is evaluated, with the results referenced against the expansive onboard database of exposure data from over 30,000 actual photographic scenes, and the final exposure value calculated--instantly. Variable-size center-weighted metering is also available, as are a choice of 11 spot meters linked to each of the 11-area AF system's area sensors.

Broad ISO-equivalent sensitivity range
The D80 features extensive range for sure performance through diverse lighting conditions. Sensitivity can be set manually between ISO speeds of 100 and 1600 in 1/3-EV increments, or boosted even higher using the HI-0.3, HI-0.7, or HI-1 settings. Automatic sensitivity adjustment (ISO AUTO) is also available offering the freedom to concentrate on composition while the camera selects the right sensitivity for the shot.

Precision white balance
Advanced Auto White Balance (AWB) produces natural coloration by matching white balance to the light source of the shot. Other flexible options include a choice of six specific manual settings with fine-tuning, (Incandescent, Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, and Shade), as well as a preset option for using a gray or white object as a reference.

11-area AF system
The D80 inherits Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 1000 AF Sensor Module that recently debuted in the D200. Refinements to this new 11-area AF system ensure consistently fast and precise focus lock under varying shooting conditions, all while the addition of effective new focusing options instills photographers with greater confidence to get the desired shot. For example, while the system is able to use each of its 11 focus areas individually, the center sensor can also be switched to wide-frame operation for broader coverage. Refinements to the programming algorithms that control lens focus action further improve system response and focus precision, along with subject acquisition and tracking abilities.

Auto-area AF mode
This new mode measures all 11 focus areas, automatically determines which of them are on the primary subject, and activates only those areas. During AF measurement, all focus areas that lie within the range of proper focus blink for easier confirmation.

Optimized colour modes
Nikon's advanced colour reproduction system optimizes the three available colour modes to best match the subject or intended use for the image.

Shutter speeds from 30 to 1/4,000 seconds can be selected manually or used in conjunction with the automated program modes. Bulb and time options as well as flash-synchronized shutter speeds of up to 1/200 seconds further enhance the digital photo experience.

Optimize image options
Easily accessed optimization options closely tailor results to the scene at hand or the intended use of the image. Image sharpening, tone compensation, color mode, saturation and hue adjustment is controlled by the user-selected choice of Normal, Softer, Vivid, More vivid, Portrait, Custom or Black-and-white options.

Multiple Exposure
This feature creates a single image within the camera from up to 3 consecutive exposures, producing an effect that resembles multiple exposure techniques used with film.

Higher energy lithium-ion battery
The EN-EL3e rechargeable lithium-ion battery with increased energy capacity delivers enough power to shoot as many as 2,700 images per charge. The battery can be recharged at any time, and it now features an accurate real-time fuel gauge system that displays the percentage of remaining charge, number of shots since last charge and overall status of battery service life.

In-camera image editing functions
Exclusive in-camera image editing features under the new Retouch menu help ensure consistently satisfying results and greater creative freedom. D-Lighting automatically brings out detail to enhance results and add creative flair, all while achieving overall exposure balance. In-camera Red-eye correction automatically detects and compensates the annoying red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash. Images can be trimmed within the camera to produce smaller files for easy sharing or greater efficiency for specific end purposes.

Large wide-angle 2.5-inch LCD monitor with improved menus
The D80 features a large new 2.5-inch 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD monitor that provides an ultra-wide 170o viewing angle from all directions. To accurately assess sharpness, images can be easily previewed at up to 25 times magnification using new dedicated zoom buttons. A new RGB histogram display aids in evaluating exposures with greater precision. Other playback options include single frame, 4 or 9-image thumbnail display, an improved histogram display and highlight point display. Refinements to the new menu interface make navigation easier on the eye, easier to understand and easier to use. The carefully chosen color scheme helps make the larger font size of menu items remarkably easy to read. Menus can be customized to display only selected items using the new "My Menu" set.

Automated Digital Vari-Program and Exposure modes
A selection of 7 Digital Vari-Programs makes creative photography as simple as rotating the mode dial. Choose from Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close Up, Sports, Night Landscape, or Night Portrait and the selected program automatically optimizes white balance, sharpening, tone (contrast), color, saturation and hue settings to best match the scene. Greater personal control over camera operation is provided by the Programmed auto [P], Shutter-Priority Auto [S], Aperture-Priority Auto [A] and Manual [M] exposure modes.

Large, bright 0.94x viewfinder
Another important new feature of the D80 is the adoption of the pentaprism viewfinder from the D200. This new eye-level optical viewfinder features large magnification (0.94x) that helps ensure a clear view for precise composition. The diopter adjustment control knob also makes it easier to fine-tune the view to match eyesight. The viewfinder's integrated grid display can also be turned on to assist composition.

Storage media (SD memory card)
The D80 is compatible with SD memory cards. Already widely in use around the world and available in a variety of capacities, SD memory cards feature efficiency and convenience in a slim, compact design.

Built-in slideshow functions Built-in slideshow options for the D80 include Standard or Pictmotion, which includes style selections that control transitions and background music. Shows can be enjoyed on the camera's 2.5-inch LCD monitor, or complete with audio on a television when connected via the supplied AV cable.

Built-in flash with i-TTL flash control
The powerful built-in flash does much more than fire when natural lighting is inadequate or effectively add balanced fill flash when there is strong backlighting.
